Can we combine two nests of ants?
No way!
Ants rely on scent pheromones for enemy identification. Even if they are all of the same species, they will fight when they meet each other as long as they belong to different colonies, therefore, it is not recommended to let different nests of ants have the chance to meet each other.
What should I do if the nest is full?
1. Moving: Guide the ants to move from the old nest to the new nest with larger capacity.
2. Expansion: Attach new nests through the holes on both sides of the nest to expand the overall capacity to accommodate more ants.
Can I release them if I don't want to keep them anymore?
No way!
Ants should not be released in the wild! Even for Taiwanese ant species, released ants are unable to adapt to the wild environment and usually do not survive and may affect the local ecological balance.

Do I need to give water to the ants?
In order to keep the ants hydrated through the air holes, we need to place a water tower in the feeding area and plug some cotton into the water outlet for the ants to get the water they need.

What should I do if there is mold in the ants' nest?
No need to do anything. Healthy ant colonies are usually not affected by mold. The ants will secrete antibiotics on their own and disinfect the nests and carcasses with formic acid, so as long as there is no abnormal mass death of the ants, no other treatment is needed.
How to feed ants
What kind of food do pet ants eat?
It is recommended to give special feeds, or sugar water and cockroaches.
Different species of ants have different dietary preferences, which can be broadly categorized as omnivorous / omnivorous-vegetarian / omnivorous-meat-oriented / carnivorous. Feeding should be based on the dietary preferences of the ants that you are keeping.
Feed the ants with nutrients that match their dietary pattern to maintain a stable colony.
Omnivorous Vegetarian Ants are suitable for feeding: Clean insect juice, fruit juice, honey, maple sugar, sugar water.
Omnivorous meaty ants are suitable for feeding: clean live insects, clean insect juices, fruit juices, honey, maple sugar, sugar water.
Can I feed ants with the same food?
No, unless it is fed a specialized feed.
Ants need a rich and diversified source of nutrients to maintain a stable production.
We recommend the use of ant trappers that are both appetizing and nutritious.Comprehensive Nutritional Feed for AntsFeeding.
A monotonous diet for indoor ants may lead to slow development of the colony or even extinction of the colony due to lack of nutrients. It is recommended to ensure the abundance and diversity of food when feeding ants.
Can I feed the ants the insects I caught?
No way!
Do not feed any self-caught insects such as cockroaches, mosquitoes, or flies; the toxins in the bodies of wild insects can kill the colony.
If you want to feed live insects, such as cherry cockroaches and bread bugs, please buy artificially bred individuals to ensure safety and feed them after boiling.
How much food should be fed to the ants at one time?
It is not necessarily the case. Each nest of ants has a different amount of food, so we suggest you to observe whether the ants have eaten all the food after each feeding, and then adjust the amount and frequency of feeding for the next time.
Ants should be fed with small amount of food to avoid moldy or even dragged into the nest.
The recommended feeding intervals for Giant Mountain Ant are listed below for reference only:
Less than 20 workers: 1 to 2 times a week
20 to 100 workers: 1 to 3 times a week
More than 1,000 workers: 2 to 5 times a week
Simple Condition Determination
Why are the ants standing still?
To minimize unnecessary energy consumption, it is normal for ants to stand still.
Why are the ants running around, shaking and banging their bellies on the floor?
When ants are scared, they will run around in panic.
Some ants will use the end of their abdomen to strike the floor, creating a vibration to deter intruders (usually small insects).
Why do ants stay still or even look dead in the cold winter weather?
Most of the Taiwan ant species have adapted to the climate in Taiwan and can usually survive the winter safely.
During cold spells (below 10 degrees Celsius), some ants may appear to be pseudo-dead and will revive when the weather warms up.
What if an ant dies in the feeding area?
The first few batches of worker ants are smaller in size and have a shorter lifespan (about 2 months). If a single ant dies, it is usually at the end of its lifespan.
However, if several worker ants die within a week, or even more than half of the total number of worker ants, it is not normal. Please check the following conditions and contact us:
Nest Humidity - Dryness of the nest will lead to mass death of ants, please rehydrate the nest as soon as possible.
Food Poisoning - Feeding wild insects to ants has a high chance of causing the death of all ants.
Environmental Poisoning - Mosquito coils, insecticides, flea removers and gutter sprays may cause poisoning to ants, please isolate the ants to a closed environment as soon as possible.
