Ant Species Information

Kaohsiung Giant Mountain Ant

Scientific name: Camponotus irritans

Worker ants have a yellowish-brown (caramel color) head, thorax and abdomen with sparse long hairs on their bodies. They are of large size and use their jaws and spray ants with acid as their main weapons.

The Kaohsiung giant mountain ant is a single queen ant with a mature colony consisting of one queen ant and about 2,000 to 5,000 worker ants. The Kaohsiung giant mountain ant is an omnivorous and vegetarian ant that feeds on plant nectar, nectar secretion, and small insects in the wild. It is mainly found in Central and Southern Taiwan, and builds its nests in rotting logs, fallen logs, and tree holes.

They are easy to feed, using feed as their staple food, gypsum nests, aerated bricks, test tubes, and a wide range of temperatures and humidity levels. The color of Kaohsiung Giant Mountain Ants depends on the age of the colony and the food it feeds on. The older the colony, the darker the color of the worker ants. The worker ants have a large amount of food stored in their abdomens, and they grow fast, produce a large amount of food, and have a medium to large size, which makes them the favorite of many ant hobbyists, and they are also very suitable for beginners to start their first nest of ants, and they are also known as "Gosanjia" for novice ant hobbyists.

In our experience, the breeding flight of Kaohsiung giant mountain ants is concentrated between 5pm and 8pm. It is worth noting that the number of breeding flights of Kaohsiung giant mountain ants is very large, and there are a lot of ants on the ground at this time after mating, which often causes surprise to passers-by.

Detailed feeding method

How to keep Kaohsiung Giant Mountain Ant? Use feed as the staple food, plaster ant nests, aerated bricks and test tubes. It is easy to keep in a room temperature environment with a water tower. In this section, we will explain how to keep Giant Mountain Ant from new to mature colonies and what to pay attention to.

Time Spent At Least 365 days

After the new one, there is not yet any work

After incubation in a plugged tube at 25~30 degrees Celsius in a dark environment for about a month, the queen ants will start to lay eggs and hatch. The queen will start to lay eggs and hatch. Even if the queen is not fed during this period, it is recommended to feed the queen once a week, as the number of eggs, larvae and cocoons will increase significantly, and it will help the weakened queen to replenish her energy.

New, 1~20 worker ants will be produced

After the first batch of worker ants are born, the feeding frequency will be increased and adjusted according to the colony development, from once a week to three times a week. Try not to interrupt the egg laying frequency of the queen ants, and do not give too much food to avoid food odor, and it is not recommended to feed live ants at this stage.

Small colony, 20~100 worker ants

As the population increases, the test tube space becomes insufficient. At this stage, we can provide plaster nests, aerated brick nests, or add a new test tube for the colony to live in. During the moving process, we must use the guiding method, and must not pour out the ants violently to prevent the colony from being shocked, which may lead to the stoppage of the queen ants' production. Adjust the feeding frequency according to the feeding condition, from once a week to 3 times a week, you may start to give live food to the colony (non-essential). Live food must be cooked or mutilated, as the ants have the habit of carrying the food back to the nest, so it is recommended to feed as few as possible so that the ants will not be able to finish all the food, which may lead to serious mold in the nest.

Small to medium sized colony, 100~1000 worker ants

Depending on the conditions, the colony will provide bigger nests and the population will increase, so the feeding frequency should be increased. Depending on the feeding conditions, the colony should be fed 2 to 4 times a week.

Mature colony, more than 1,000 workers

The Kaohsiung Giant Mountain Ant colony has an upper limit of 2,000 to 5,000 worker ants. At this stage, the colony will produce male ants, virgin ants, etc. The colony will be fed 5 to 7 times a week depending on the feeding status.
